best slicers for older replicator clones

my dad bought me used 3D printer for prototyping (a "Replicator 7.5" clone), but I’m hitting a wall with the software.
it uses .x3g files, and honestly, wrestling with ReplicatorG and Slic3r profiles has been a total headache. I’ve only had one successful print (a simple cylinder) and trying to dial in more complex G-code settings is getting old fast.

I know MakerWare exists, but it’s too basic. I need more control, which is why I’m eyeing Simplify3D. is it actually worth the $140 for a machine like this? I’ve heard it handles the Replicator series well, but I want to be sure it’ll play nice with .x3g before I drop the cash.

are there any other free slicers that can output .x3g without a dozen workarounds?
also, if anyone has a tried and true extruder calibration guide, please share. thanks

If it were me, I’d pause before dropping $140 until you confirm your exact board/firmware and how you’re generating .x3g. A lot of the “it works great” stories depend on the specific Replicator-style electronics, not just the frame.

For extruder calibration, the simplest routine I’ve used is: set nozzle temp, mark 120mm on filament, command 100mm extrude, measure what actually moved, then adjust E-steps (or the equivalent setting) and repeat once. After that, I’d do a basic single-wall cube to sanity check flow. It’s boring but it helped me stop guessing.

For a Replicator 7.5 clone that wants .x3g, the cleanest path is usually modern slicer plus a reliable x3g converter, not living inside ReplicatorG forever. Simplify3D can be smoother for legacy MakerBot style machines, but I would not buy it until you confirm your exact electronics and firmware match a supported Replicator profile. In February, old SD cards and flaky USB connections also cause “mystery failures,” so rule that out too. wwhat controller board is in the clone and are you using an SD card or USB?
