Swapped build plates and I still fight adhesion, what worked for you long term?

I feel like I’m going in circles with first layers. Same printer, same filament, same room, but adhesion feels like a coin flip. I’ve been on the stock surface, then tried a glass plate for a bit, and now I’m eyeing PEI and the textured plates everyone swears by.

Last week I leveled, cleaned, and got a perfect first layer on one print, then the next print started lifting at a corner like it forgot everything. If you’ve tried glass, PEI, and textured plates on the same machine, which one actually made your life easier without constant babying?

Before you buy another plate, it helps to isolate one variable. If the same file sometimes sticks and sometimes lifts, it’s usually a cleanliness or Z offset consistency issue more than the surface. A quick check is to print a one layer square and watch the lines, you want them slightly pressed together, not rounded and separate.

What printer do you have?

I hate glass beds - you always have to use hairspray, glue sticks... to get things to stick. Yuck!

The PEI sheets are great! The smooth one are good for PLA. The textured ones are good for PETG (PETG stick to smooth plates extremely well). Prusa also has a sheet that they call "Satin" - it has small bumps compared to the textured sheet. Satin will handle PLA and PETG very well. No hairspray required for anything (that I print - maybe still needs w ABS...?)

Warping CAN be caused by drafts - heater vents, people walking by even...

PEI was the first plate that felt boring in a good way. Smooth PEI for PLA and textured PEI for PETG has been way less coin flip than glass. The long term trick was cleaning it right, like dish soap and water sometimes, not just alcohol.
