Anyone running custom firmware on their DIY printer?

I’ve been messing around with a DIY printer I put together from spare parts, and it’s running fine on the stock Marlin setup. Lately I keep seeing people talking about Klipper or other custom firmware, and I’m wondering if it’s worth diving into. Does switching firmware really make a big difference in print speed or quality, or is it more about having extra features? I don’t want to break a working setup just to chase hype, but if it’s a night-and-day upgrade, I’d like to try it. Anyone here running custom firmware on their self-built printer? What’s been your experience?

I’ve run Marlin since the early RepRap days and it’s still reliable, while Klipper can give you faster speeds and smoother motion if your hardware can keep up. The real gains are usually in features like input shaping and easier tuning rather than a huge jump in print quality. Out of curiosity, what board and stepper drivers are you using in your DIY build, since that will help determine if Klipper is worth the switch?
 
oh yeah, switching to a custom firmware like Klipper can make a significant, night and day difference. not just in print speed and quality, but Klipper also has easier configuration and you can create powerful, customized Gcode macros to automate complex tasks
 
Custom firmware can be great, but only if your setup can use what it offers. Klipper’s faster tuning and detailed controls help a lot of DIY machines, but Marlin is still rock-solid if stability is your priority. What part of your current setup feels most limiting right now? That usually decides whether a firmware jump is worth the effort.
 
I'm still running Marlin on my old FDM printer, I did recompile it to deal with new stepper drivers running twice the steps and to increase the temperature limits to deal with Nylon and ABS, if your hardware is capable of greater performance the change might be worth going for.
