Bed Upgrades?

Has anyone tried any of the 'bed upgrade' kits found on Blurolls3D? I have one on the way for my Q1 Pro, but there isnt a lot of feedback that I can find on the 'net. My Qidi started suffering from taco bed syndrome, so looking for a more robust solution. 8mm thick aluminum stock, probably 6000 series aluminum, but thats a lot of additional mass, and I wonder if their silicon heat pad can actually deal with it. OEM is 24v 240w (not sure if that wattage is nominal or max rated). It seems the board and/or power-supply would have to be able handle additional draw, otherwise the heat-up time will take much longer.

Blurolls lists the Qidi Q1 Pro bed upgrade as an 8mm CNC aluminum plate paired with a 110/220V silicone heater pad, not 24V, so it’s likely meant to bypass the stock 24V setup entirely.

If you’re still planning to use the OEM 24V 240W supply, that pad won’t be compatible without a step-down or swap, and the extra mass will slow heat-up unless you match the voltage and wattage properly. Do you know if your kit includes a relay or SSR to handle mains voltage safely, or are you planning to wire it directly to the board?
 
Heh, yeah, thats what I was thinking. It showed up the other day, and I've been playing with it. Whats funny is that I reached out to them more than a few times, and point-blank asked if the heater pad was compatible with 24v spec. to which they said yes, "plug-n-play". Their wiring setup clearly indicates 110v/220v on the pad, so I checked the impedance:

Red - Blue = 102Ω
Red - Black = 55Ω
Blue - Black = 55Ω

So yeah, its clearly for 110v mainline, which the Q1 power-supply cant push with 24v. Wont hurt anything, but it'll never heat up to any usable extent. Kit didnt come with anything else from an electrical standpoint. Ultimately, its not going to work. The plate is good, square and exceedingly flat, and machine work is acceptable and lines up as it should on the Q1. I emailed them with my points, I'll see what they say, assuming they reply at all. Unfortunately its a Holiday week in China so I'm not holding my breath.

Worst case, I may hit up Keenovo for a 24v custom pad, and see what they say about the additional mass of the plate.

Griff, since you mentioned the pad was rated for 110V and not working well on 24V, have you had a chance to weigh the plate yet to see how much extra mass you’re dealing with? That detail could shape whether a custom Keenovo pad is worth ordering.
 
Havent had a chance to weigh it yet, had to get the printer back together with another bed first. The OEM bed has a plate about 4mm to 5mm thick, this new one is 8mm. Blueroll did respond asking for more info, so I just spelled it out for them. The Ohms dont lie, lol. They have conflicting information, but it stands to reason, 24v and 110v arent the same. Its a typical Chinese company, so language barrier and/or poor translation may be part of the larger issue. I'll see what they say.

Ah Blurolls3D, a bunch of clowns apparently. As predicted, they got back to me indicating I need an SSR, and to run it mainline, which is what I didnt want to do. Made all their previous responses at best very incorrect, at worst quite deceptive. Considering the product page mentions nothing about it, and they responded previously that this would work with the Q1 out of the box, they clearly arent a serious company.

Will check with Keenovo for sure at this point on a proper pad, if not, maybe explore doing an SSR mainline setup.

Did you ever get a final answer back from Keenovo on a custom pad, or are you still weighing the SSR route? Knowing which way you went would help others following along who hit the same mismatch on voltage and plate mass.
 
I havent submitted anything to them just yet, just had a brief conversation. Had to run some numbers based on this bed plate, material, mass vs wattage vs power supply capability, etc etc. I have it sorted out now, and will submit a request for a quote within the next day or so. Had to draw up an appropriate pad diagram as well, but I have everything needed now.

After a few discussions with the sales/tech folks, and running some numbers, the order has been placed. The pad is 24v 260w, its within the PSU capabilities with a safe margin for printer overhead. They had suggested 300w initially, but the PSU would be operating near max continuous load, 260-270 is the sweet spot. They are able to make the pad to my drawing (cut-outs for the spring mounts) without issue. High grade wiring, Themsistor, etc, Lohmann adhesive backing. Heat-up time to 76c should be 6-10 mins based on calculations. For $72 bucks its an OK price, but it will solve the problems at hand, hopefully. Takes up to 25 days to produce and ship, so you all will have to wait a bit for an update :)
