Is recycled filament reliable for functional prints?

I keep seeing recycled PLA marketed as “just as good as new,” but I’m not convinced. With all the added variables... moisture content, inconsistent batches, and who knows what kind of base material... I feel like it’s asking for trouble. In South Carolina’s humidity, even fresh PLA can get brittle fast if you don’t store it right. Recycled stuff seems even riskier for anything beyond basic prototypes. Has anyone here put recycled PLA through its paces on big prints or parts under stress? Does it really stand up to daily use, or is it mostly hype for eco-friendly marketing?

you know, the recycled part isn't the problem so much as the unknown thermal history of the plastic. I've had success with recycled PLA from Prusa's ReFillment, but I wouldn't use it for anything load bearing.
Stick to prototypes or decorative prints for the recycled spools. For functional parts, run a stress test print (like a calibration cube or tension hook) and see how it performs before committing to a 12 hour job.

Thanks for the tip! I’m new to 3D printing. mostly making props and small fixes. I like the idea of using recycled PLA, but didn’t think about heat damage.
How can you tell if the filament is weak while printing? Have you tried mixing it with fresh PLA to make it stronger?

that's actually a good tip. but for me personally, idk... I tried a spool of recycled black PLA a while back just for prototyping, and my prints were a disaster. It was super brittle and had way more inconsistent diameters, which led to nonstop clogging. my advice for everyone is to trust your gut feeling. if it looks like a bad idea, then don't take it. avoid the risk
