Just getting into resin printing, what are the must haves?

I’m brand new to resin printing and I’m excited, but I’m also realizing the basics can get messy fast. I keep seeing people mention gloves, wash containers, cure lights, filters, scrapers, silicone mats, and a bunch of other stuff, and I’m not sure what is truly essential versus just nice to have. I want a simple setup that keeps things clean and helps me avoid the most common beginner failures.

A specific moment that made me want to ask was this week when I did my first couple prints and felt that satisfying wow moment from the detail, then immediately had that oh no moment when I noticed sticky drips and resin smell in places I did not expect. It made me want to set up a proper workflow before I build bad habits. If you were helping a newbie start from scratch, what tools would you consider non negotiable for keeping resin printing clean and repeatable?

If you want a simple workflow, I’d prioritize a dedicated wash setup, a curing solution, and a spill proof surface like a silicone mat or tray. Add a funnel and paint filters for pouring resin back cleanly and you’ll avoid a lot of early mess.

If you want the minimum kit that prevents most beginner mess, I’d start with gloves, a scraper you trust, a funnel and paint filters for pouring resin back, and a lidded trash container for contaminated wipes. A small set of soft brushes helps get resin out of details during washing. After that, better ventilation and a consistent wash and cure routine will do more than buying a bunch of extra gadgets.

Agree on the basics like a good scraper, gloves, a funnel and a good mat. I invested in a small heater to fit under the cover and keeping it at 30C gives me consistent performance with all my resins. Not the cheapest, but Wham Bam Systems has nice mats and accessories. I have their Wyp and it is great when cleaning out resin. Also bought their resin stand so I can just sit the vat over a bottle and let it completely drain hands-free.

My curing station is a 5 gallon bucket, lined with foil (3M 77 spray adhesive on the back of foil, then apply it). Cut a hole in the lid for my UV light. For small batch printing it works great. Other than the light, I have maybe $10 invested, tops.

If you want to use an ultrasonic bath for washing, get them on eBay. I have 2 of them: one has IPA, one has water. It’s easy to get ones that both heat and sonicate.
