Retraction and temp tweaks feel random, what is the right order to test?

I’m trying to learn the basics of dialing in settings and stringing is the one thing that keeps making me nervous. I know it is usually retraction, temperature, and cooling, but every time I change something I feel like I fix one print and break the next. I want a simple way to test so I can understand cause and effect instead of guessing.

This weekend I ran a quick test and it was honestly satisfying seeing a clean result, like okay the printer can do it. Then later the stringing returned and I started doubting the filament, the room conditions, or my slicer settings. If you were coaching a beginner, what is the first setting you would lock down, and what simple test or habit helped you make stringing consistent across prints?
 
Stringing feels random until you test one variable at a time. I usually lock down filament condition first, then temperature, then retraction. A damp spool can make every other change feel pointless.
 
The golden rule is to temp first, then Retraction. start with a Temperature Tower

if your nozzle is too hot, the filament will be too runny for any retraction setting to stop. once you find the lowest temp that still gives you good layer adhesion, then move to a Retraction Tower. if you do it in reverse, you’ll spend your life chasing ghost settings

check your filament moisture. If your room is even slightly humid, PLA and PETG can soak up water in just a few days
wet filament will string no matter how perfect your retraction settings are. If you see tiny bubbles or hear popping at the nozzle, it’s time for a filament dryer, not more slicer tweaks
