3d printing goes messy

my buddy just got his first 3D printer and is totally hooked, but he's run into a weird issue on his third print. He's printing a cable organizer that has a honeycomb pattern and the stuff in the middle looks super messy.
It looks like the filament is dragging and melting where the printer jumps between parts of the print. He's a total beginner and has no idea what's going on.

I'm guessing maybe the movements are too fast or the nozzle is too hot? Any ideas on what's causing this? We're open to any tips!

You guys should try lowering the temp a bit and enabling or tuning retraction in the slicer

That sounds familiar! I helped my cousin set up his first Ender 3 last month, and we had the same problem with messy lines in small areas. The nozzle was too hot, and the retraction settings needed fixing. I agree with their suggestions, try lowering the temperature by 5–10 deg c and adjusting how far and how fast the filament pulls back. If your slicer has a combing mode, turning it on can help the nozzle move better without dragging across open spots.

It’s super common for new printers. Nozzle temp’s probably a little too high and the filament’s drooling when it moves. If he’s using stock settings, try lowering the temp slightly and clean the nozzle. If it still looks rough, re-slice the model with “avoid crossing perimeters” checked so that it keeps travel paths cleaner.
