Bed adhesion basics question, clean bed but still lifting

I’m new to 3D printing and I’m getting that nervous feeling where I keep repeating the same steps and nothing changes. I clean the bed, I level, I try a different model, and the first layer still won’t stick consistently. Sometimes it looks like it is going to work, then the corners lift or the nozzle drags a bit and everything snowballs.

This weekend I had one print where the first layer laid down so nicely that it felt satisfying and made me excited, like okay I get it now. Then the next attempt with the same settings failed again and I realized I do not understand the basics yet. What do you usually check first when a clean bed still will not hold, and what small adjustment tends to fix it without turning into a full day of chasing settings?

If you want one small adjustment that fixes a lot, slow the first layer down and make sure the nozzle is just a touch closer so the line is slightly flattened, not round. Also make sure the bed is fully warmed up for a few minutes before you start, cold glass or cold plates can lie to you.

When this happens to me, the first thing I re-check is Z offset and first-layer squish, because a “clean bed” still won’t save it if you’re a hair too high. I’ll slow the first layer and bump bed temp slightly, then try again before touching anything else.
