how do you stop chasing random tweaks and get consistent prints?

I’m still pretty new to 3D printing and I’m realizing the slicer is where most of the real learning happens. I keep changing random settings after every print and it feels like I’m guessing more than improving. I want a beginner toolkit of calibration prints and core settings to focus on so I can build a repeatable baseline instead of constantly starting over.

A specific moment that made me want a real process was this week when I finally got a clean print and it felt satisfying, then I changed one setting for a different model and the next print looked worse. That made me realize I need to understand what settings matter most and which ones I should leave alone until later. What calibration prints do you think every newbie should run first, and what slicer settings should be the first ones to learn so you can get consistent results?
 
A small toolkit that kept me sane was a first layer square, a temp tower, and a retraction test. Run them in that order, lock in the best looking result, then stop tweaking unless a print shows a specific problem like stringing or poor adhesion. Consistency comes from having a default you trust, not from finding the perfect setting every time.
 
If you want a beginner toolkit, I’d start with a first layer test, then a simple temp tower, then a retraction or stringing test, then a basic flow or wall thickness check. Those four usually cover most of the weirdness without you touching 50 settings.
 
I forced myself to pick one profile and stop touching 20 settings. I run a temp tower, a retraction test, and a first layer square, then I save that as my baseline and only change one thing per print. Biggest win was writing down what I changed so I can undo it fast.
 
It depends on your printer but there are general principles that can reduce the seemingly constant cycle of changing print settings. I think sticking as close to the defaults is a good baseline. Then I would do testing on an as needed basis. That should save you from trying to tweak or optimize settings that work well enough right off the bat. Most importantly save all your prints so you have a record of what works.
