Need help splitting oversized 3D helmet file

I'm looking for some assistance with a large 3D helmet file. I recently scanned a vintage helmet and ended up with a full-size STL file, but it's just too big for my printer. I really need help slicing it up properly, free tools just aren't doing the trick.

I've run into that with big STL scans before. Best bet is to use Meshmixer or Netfabb to cut it cleanly into printable sections, they can handle large files better than most of the free quick fix tools. Once you slice it up, you can add alignment pins so it reassembles smoothly after printing
 
For a file like a helmet, you need a program that allows for precise slicing and also for adding alignment features to make assembly easier. Check out Blender. While it has a steeper learning curve, you can use its Boolean operations to cut the helmet with a custom-shaped object or a simple plane, then separate the pieces.

Another one is Meshmixer, which is also free and has a simple plane cut tool. User-friendly and can also help you add features like locator pins to ensure the parts fit together perfectly after printing. Some slicers like PrusaSlicer also have built-in cutting functions you can also check that.
 
Meshmixer all the way but if that feels clunky, Netfabb is still okay and there's a free basic version too. Once you chop it into pieces that fit your build plate, you can glue or epoxy it back together after printing.
 
Free tools can get you 80% there, but if the file is messy from the scan, you're gonna fight it no matter what. Sometimes it's worth spending $20–30 on a proper mesh editor (like Netfabb basic or Simplify3D) just to save hours of frustration.

yeah, I use Meshmixer for exactly this. Since it's a helmet, it's probably big, somewhat symmetrical object, try the Edit -> Plane Cut tool. Make sure you select the 'Slice' or 'Keep Both' option to retain both halves. The alignment pins are key to a clean final seam, and Meshmixer has a simple way to create them using a cylinder and the boolean difference/combine tools
 
If your free tools suck, try Meshmixer + a bit of manual editing. Cut, separate, export. After printing, glue or bolt with small pins so seams hold tight.
