Quick sanity thread on PLA and PETG moisture

When do you decide a spool is wet enough to dry, and when do you just leave the filament alone and troubleshoot normally?

For PLA and PETG, what symptom shows up first for you that makes you go yeah, this is moisture
And what’s your low effort storage routine that keeps things consistent?

I’m especially curious about routines that are simple and repeatable, the kind you can recommend to a newer person without them needing a bunch of extra gear.

My no fuss setup is gallon zip bags + a couple silica packs per spool, then into a plastic tote. If PLA suddenly starts getting random stringing and tiny pops at the nozzle even with the same profile, that’s usually my first moisture hint. PETG for me shows it as extra stringing and rough “fuzzy” walls before it fully melts down into chaos.

My “dry it” trigger is stringing + random pops/crackles at the nozzle that weren’t there before. If it’s just messy corners or a rough seam, I troubleshoot settings first.
Low fuss storage: spool stays in the bag it came in with a couple silica packs and I actually push the air out before sealing.

I try not to blame moisture for everything, but if I hear crackling at the nozzle or see random blobs that weren’t there before, I start thinking wet filament.
