is coastal humidity making your prints weird?

quick question for anyone living near the coast like how are you keeping your filament from soaking up moisture this time of year? I’m in Rhode Island, and the air’s been super damp lately. My PLA and PETG have been acting up with more stringing and popping than usual, even though I keep them in a plastic bin with silica gel packs. Do I really need to invest in one of those fancy filament dryers, or are there DIY tricks that actually work in a humid coastal setup? I’d love to hear what you all do before I start spending more on storage than on filament itself.

If you’re near the water, it’s almost impossible to keep stuff bone dry without heat. The “sealed tub with gel packs” trick is fine inland, but by the coast, it’s like trying to keep a sponge dry in fog. Either run a dryer before each print or keep the spool in a heated dry box while printing.

If you don’t want to buy a dryer yet, try a food dehydrator. Works great for filament and costs less. I used one for months before finally upgrading.

a proper dryer helps, but you don’t have to buy the expensive ones. I’ve been tossing my rolls into a cheap airtight rice bin with fresh desiccant and a tiny temp-controlled heat pad underneath. Keeps moisture down without blowing the budget.
